In December 2011, Welch joined with RG Graphics Editor Rob Romig and Assistant Graphics Editor Paul Carter to produce a four-day, 24-page series, “Call of Duty,” on Lane County’s World War II veterans. In March, the series was honored by Editor & Publisher magazine in its “Ten Papers That Do It Right” feature.

After the Haiti earthquakes, a number of readers requested re-runs of the two columns Welch wrote on that country in June and July of 2009 after going there with a Haiti Foundation of Hope team. Here they are:
